RECIPE

Sumo Citrus® Spice Latte

This twist on an autumn classic is a perfect blend of the familiar flavors of fall and the legendary taste of Sumo Citrus, created in partnership with our friends at Alfred Coffee.

  • Prep Time: 10 minutes
  • Cook Time: 5 minutes
  • Total Time: 15 minutes
  • Makes: 10-14 servings

Ingredients

Citrus Spice Syrup:

3 Sumo Citrus

3/4 cup + 1 Tablespoon white cane sugar

1/2 tsp cinnamon

1/4 tsp allspice

1/8 tsp powdered ginger

Citrus Spice Latte:

45 fl oz milk of choice

2 fl oz brewed espresso (we recommend Alfred Espresso)

Instructions

Making the Sumo Citrus Spice Syrup:

We recommend building your syrup in a 16oz Mason Jar, with a lid.

  1. Zest one Sumo Citrus and add zest to the jar.
  2. Juice your zested fruit, plus one more Sumo Citrus — this should yield 3/4 cup of juice. Add the juice to the jar. (If you come up short, you can juice part of your remaining fruit, just save 1/2 of the fruit for slicing!)
  3. Add the white sugar, cinnamon, allspice, and ginger to the jar. Seal the lid and shake vigorously until all the sugar is dissolved and the spices are evenly distributed.
  4. Slice your last Sumo Citrus in half, then cut the half into thin slices. Add the slices to the jar, re-lid, and shake again to incorporate.
  5. The syrup is best the next day but can be immediately used! Adjust spices as necessary for personal preference. The Sumo Citrus Spice Syrup should keep for at least 1 month, refrigerated. Syrup made in a 16 oz jar will yield 10-14 lattes, depending on sweetness preference.

Always shake the syrup jar before using. You can also use it on other dishes, such as drizzled on ice cream or waffles, even as a glaze for savory items such as roasted Brussels sprouts, grilled chicken thighs, or salmon.

Building a Sumo Citrus Spice Iced Latte:

  1. Fill a tall glass with ice.
  2. Add 3 Tablespoons (1.5oz) of Sumo Citrus Spice Syrup to the glass.
  3. Fill with 4-5oz of your milk of choice.
  4. Make a double shot of espresso (either with an espresso machine, moka pot, or even instant coffee), and layer over the top.
  5. Garnish with a Sumo Citrus slice from your syrup jar and enjoy!

Building a Sumo Citrus Spice Hot Latte:

  1. Add 2 Tablespoons (1oz) of Sumo Citrus Spice Syrup to a mug.
  2. Make a double shot of espresso (either with an espresso machine, moka pot, or even instant coffee) and add to the mug, stirring to incorporate.
  3. Steam 4-5oz of your milk of choice until it increases in volume by around 30% and is creamy. You can also achieve this on the stove by heating it to around 140º and using an electric whisk to aerate it gently. Add your milk to the drink.
  4. Garnish with a Sumo Citrus slice from your syrup jar, some extra dusted cinnamon, and enjoy!
